The first film John worked on as both
Art Director and Production Designer was the
'controversial' Independent Film 'Sweet Meats' by Landmine
Films Ltd in 1998. A apocalyptical version of British Society by a
young American Director and Writer Joshua Oppenheimers.
After story boarding the whole production John and his Art Dept
dressed the set with exploding and burning cars and buildings, dead
animal carcasses {cats, cows and dogs}, fields of large surreal
metal sculptures {which he built from scrap colleted on the
beaches}, and other scenes of anarchy, abuse and degradation, in
keeping with society on the brink of melt down. This included
dressing a number of derelict buildings and private homes,
simulating decaying food and mounds of rotting wedding cakes,
copious amounts of blood, a fake terrorist bomb, and a floor covered
with 100's of clocks and rubbish. All this demanded quickly solving
a series of challenging problems, often on set, an the day, within a
tight shooting schedule. A small budget meant there was little room
for second chances in getting a shot right which brought the best
out in all the crew including his Art Dept, the stoic cast and
extras. Filming took place on the south coast in the UK during the
winter of 1998 where a very obliging local community and locations
were utilised for all the extras and sets. Locations and props
included the beach, a public miniature railway, and ice cream van
and the grounds and pylons of a nuclear power station! Truly a
utterly bizarre experience. |
